Old Siuslaw Mill, Near Mapleton, Oregon by Alex Ziwahatan Chase, June 2026
"My mom and I were driving back to Eugene from our new house in Florence. We had just been talking about this mill earlier in the drive. So I had my phone ready to snap some pictures of it. I ended up being very happy with the moment captured. I absolutely love the fence out front of the trees and little bears. I can't help but imagine how this place would have looked when in full swing. But time has a way at erasing things that once were. It's up to us to not let history be left to the tides."

Alex Ziwahatan Chase is an American landscape photographer, seventh-generation Oregonian, EDM artist (via the stage-name "Ziwahatan"), inventor, author, entrepreneur, caregiver, and political candidate, whose work celebrates the beauty of Oregon's central coast. Drawing inspiration from deep family roots in the Pacific Northwest, Chase captures the landscapes, wildlife, and fleeting moments that define one of America's most remarkable and often overlooked coastal regions.
As the creator of Siuslaw Country, Chase documents the ever-changing character of Oregon's central coast—from rugged shorelines and towering sea cliffs to quiet forests, winding rivers, coastal dunes, and historic communities. His work emphasizes natural light, authentic composition, and a profound appreciation for the places that make the Siuslaw region unique. Each photograph is intended not only to preserve a moment in time, but to inspire a lasting connection to the landscape.
Beyond photography, Chase is the founder and CEO of OMnithion, where he has developed an extensive portfolio of innovative technologies spanning aerospace, medicine, energy, artificial intelligence, environmental science, and advanced materials. He is also the author of several published books, including The Enlil Key, Vices, and the Pocahontas: Vampire Queen series.
Chase's passion for the state's natural beauty, history, and heritage is reflected in every image he creates. Through Siuslaw Country, he invites viewers to slow down, look closer, and discover the extraordinary beauty that exists in the quiet places where the forest meets the sea.
